Science Vocab

matter -- anything that has mass and takes up space
physical properties -- characteristics that can be observed without changing what the substance is made of
length -- the number of units that fit from one end to the other
volume -- how much space a substance takes up
temperature -- a measure of how hot or cold something is
mass -- the amount of matter that makes up an object
density -- the amount of matter in a given space
weight -- the measure of the pull of gravity between an object and Earth
physical change -- a change that begins and ends with the same type of matter
change of state -- a physical change of matter from one state to another
states of matter -- solids, liquids, gases
heat -- the movement of energy from warmer to cooler objects
light -- a form of energy that allows you to see objects
radiant energy -- heat and light that can move through both air and space
chemical energy -- a type of energy that is stored in the particles that make up food and other fuels
solar energy --  radiant energy from the sun
opaque -- an object that blocks light from passing through
transparent -- an object through which light can pass
translucent -- an object through which light can pass, but which scatters the light
absorption -- to take in energy
reflection -- when light bounces off an object
refraction -- the bending of light as it passes from one material to another
concave lens -- a lens that has an inward, curved shape and refracts light outward
