Chapter 5 Social Studies Vocabulary
 
A. absolute power -- complete control
B. brand -- to mark by burning
C. charter -- a legal document granting permission to settle a piece of land
D. constitution -- a document that outlines the ideas and laws of government
E. credit -- the practice of buying things and paying for them over time
F. debt -- something that is owed
G. democracy -- government by the people
H. House of Burgesses -- elected representatives that made laws for the colonies
J. indentured servant -- a person who worked for another person for a period of time in order to pay back a debt, usually the price of passage to the country
K. land speculator -- a person who researches, buys, and sells land
L. long hunter -- a hunter who stayed in the mountains for long periods of time
M. Mayflower Compact -- an agreement written by the Pilgrims that established the first colonial government
